Οι αρετές του αυτοκράτορα στις νομισματοκοπίες των ρωμαϊκών επαρχιών

Το παρόν άρθρο έχει ως στόχο μια γενική επισκόπηση της απεικόνισης στα νομίσματα των ρωμαϊκών επαρχιών μιας συγκεκριμένης ομάδας προσωποποιήσεων ιδεατών εννοιών, εκείνων που αντιστοιχούσαν στις αρετές του αυτοκράτορα. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, θα διερευνηθεί κατά πόσο και με ποιο τρόπο οι θεοποιημένες αρετές που πλαισίωναν τη δημόσια εικόνα του αυτοκράτορα στο κέντρο της αυτοκρατορίας, τη Ρώμη, διαδόθηκαν στο τοπικό επίπεδο των επαρχιών, τόσο στη δυτική, όσο και την ανατολική Μεσόγειο.

The Emperor’s Virtues in the Coinages of the Roman Provinces

The present paper aims at a general overview of the depiction of imperial virtues on the coins of the Roman provinces, as those appeared in the coinage of Rome. In this frame, it is investigated whether and how those virtues that enhanced the public image of the emperor in the center of the Empire, Rome, spread to the local level of the provinces, both in the western and the eastern Mediterranean. It is concluded that imperial virtues were largely left out of the numismatic iconography of the provinces. Their sporadic appearance is strongly related to the Roman element, in cities of Roman status, and in regions and periods characterized by intense war activity, with an extensive presence of Roman soldiers. Although surprising at first, the absence of this iconographic theme at the provinces is probably related to the lack of a local tradition of honoring the rulers through their personified virtues, as developed in Rome already since the Republican period. This fact led to different responses and ways of approaching and honoring the emperor on coins, expressed differently in the West and the East, according to their previous political/social traditions.
