A Middle Helladic–Late Helladic settlement of special importance was brought to light on the hill of Ayios Yeoryios located on the coast of the village Kalloni in Troezenia (ca. 6km NW of Troezen). The pottery recovered ranged in date from MH III to LH IIIC Early. Some direct or indirect evidence for local production of pottery and manufacture of lithic artefacts (seals and buttons) indicates that the site was inhabited by artisans. This settlement was most probably dependent on the major MH–LH site discovered at Megali Magoula, Galatas, and identified as Prehistoric Troezen. The presence of Aeginetan type vessels and the use of pre-firing marks in an unusually high percentage of the MH-LH pottery from Kalloni raise the question whether some Aeginetan potters settled there in those periods, when Troezen was developing into an important MH–LH center, ruled by a prosperous elite.
Key words: Troezen, Megali Magoula, Aegina, Methana, mica, potters’ marks, seals
