This is a review article of the surveys conducted in the area of southwestern Messenia, an area not particularly investigated for the Paleolithic period, aiming at the reconstruction of the ancient landscape and paleogeography of the area from the last interglacial period, 120,000 years ago. The reconstitution is based on earlier chronological analyses of coastal fossilized dunes in the Navarino area, while archaeological finds are described from earlier surface archaeological excavations. In the context of the environmental changes of the Quaternary, the Paleolithic populations were significantly affected by the changing coastal geomorphology, encouraging hominids to adapt to new distributions of resources.
